The early working title was "Facts." Until the 1930's, writers used clippings from newspapers and other magazines as their source for news. Founders Henry Luce and Briton Hadden conceived of their newsmagazine while still undergrads at Yale.TIME's purpose was to organize and summarize the news so that busy men could stay informed. TIME was written to be read from cover to cover in an hour. Pictured on the first cover was Joseph G. Cannon, a retiring 86-year-old Congressman known as "Uncle Joe." Every week, TIME reaches 22 million readers -- more Americans than any other news source. Capturing 44% of newsmagazines sold each week, TIME continues to be the undisputed leader.
